You’ll always remember Francie Nolan, the young, bookish, resourceful protagonist of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Growing up in turn-of-the-century Brooklyn and caught between her dreamer of a father and her work-worn, sensible mom, Francie is self-aware and a eager observer of individuals and the life around her. Even when life grinds her down, Francie seeks magnificence and truth. I adore James Herriot’s telling of his life as a country veterinarian in Yorkshire–the books in this series are heat, funny, and touching. Eli Bell adores his dysfunctional family, but when the violence of his parents’ drug business comes to their house, every little thing goes mistaken. Eli strives to rescue his mother, discover what grew to become of his stepfather, become a criminal offense journalist, and live as much as his potential as well as taking down the native drug kingpin.
High within the Appalachian hills, a lady comes each two weeks on horseback to deliver books to Cal’s family. Cal has no actual curiosity in reading, but he wonders what could possibly make her long treks in the snow and wind worthwhile?
